There are ten higher education institutions in Cabo Verde. The only public university is the University of Cabo Verde, and the rest are private universities. Private universities are solely funded by tuition, whereas the University of Cabo Verde is subsidized by the government, though students must still pay tuition. The higher education system in Cabo Verde follows the traditional path of a Bachelor’s, followed by a Master’s, then a Doctorate. Bachelor’s degrees usually take 3 to 4 years to complete. Master’s generally take 2 years to complete and Doctorates vary depending on the subject matter, but generally take between 2 to 4 years. Students must pass special exams in order to be accepted to medical degrees in Cabo Verde. Moreover, many medical degrees are offered in the form of Integrated Master’s degrees and take between 5 to 6 years to complete. Universities also offer technical vocational degrees which are more specialized than Bachelor’s degrees.
There is no centralized body of administration for applications to higher education institutions in Cabo Verde. Therefore, students must apply directly to the universities themselves. All internationally recognized diplomas such as the French Baccalaureate or the English A levels are accepted for Bachelor’s degrees. For some degrees, students must also complete entrance exams such as for medical degrees. When applying, international students must be able to prove that they will be able to finance themselves during their stay. Master’s and doctoral students must also apply directly via the institution and are required to pass exams such as the GMAT for medical degrees and the LSAT for law degrees.
The official language of instruction in Cabo Verde is Portuguese along with English due to the large proportion of private universities. Thus, students must also prove their proficiency of the English language through the TOEFL test. Most universities are based in urban areas and therefore have city campuses.
