As of 2018, there are about 170,000 international students from more than 135 countries studying in Malaysia. This number has been increasing over the years. Malaysia has 20 public universities, around 50 private higher education institutions and 10 foreign university branch campuses in Malaysia. All of the public universities are allowed to accept international students but only 41 private institutions can accept international students. Both public and private institutions are open to international students. International students can only pursue full-time courses. According to QS World University Rankings 2020, for public institutions, Universiti Malaya is at the highest ranking of 70 followed by Universiti Putra Malaysia at 159th place. Educational Structure
Most institutions use English as the language of instruction. In private institutions, qualifications accepted to acquire a bachelor degree are STPM, UEC, A-levels, AUSMAT, matriculation, various qualifications by local public colleges, IB, foundation, diploma, any qualifications deemed equivalent by Malaysian Qualifications Agency and for other academic qualifications, private institutions will evaluate on a case-by-case basis. For public institutions, qualifications accepted are usually STPM, A-levels, various qualifications by local public colleges. English proficiency test is required when applying for a visa. Accepted English language tests are IELTS, TOEFL, PTE-A, CAE, CPE, and MUET. A Bachelor’s degree in Malaysia takes 3 years to complete. Some Honours Degree may require an extra year or two. Master’s degree will require a bachelor’s degree as the entry requirement, it will take 1-3 years for completion. A Doctorate degree requires a Master’s degree and will take around 3-4 years. In Malaysia, every institution has its own application and admission process. You will need to submit applications to institutions directly. You may apply to as many institutions as you prefer.

Information for International Students
Visa application will take around 3-4 weeks. This process begins after accepting the offer from the institution. Visa application can be done online or through the institution. A medical screening is required post-arrival in Malaysia at registered clinics.
